A holistic model of the Social and Emotional learner
This issue brief, published on the University of Minnesota extension website, proposes a “Ways of Being” model as a holistic way to understand the social and emotional learner. This model layers three interrelated ways for being (identity, awareness and navigation) with three dimensions (ways of feelings, relating to others, and doing), integrating SEL-related concepts into one framework from which to consider the skills, attitudes and behaviors within a socially and emotionally competent learner. One novel contribution of this model makes is the inclusion of a person’s identity as playing a critical role in their social and emotional learning process.
